SUSHI-MAKING EXPERIENCE FOR OLYMPIA’S HOTEL STUDENTS
It's a lot easier to make than you think. The Hotel Programme students of Olympia College, Ipoh campus had an opportunity to experience the art of Sushi-making in a hands-on workshop at the campus as one of the Hosteurs Club activity. The Sushi-making workshop was designed to teach them everything they need to know to make delicious, healthy Sushi on their own. They learnt how to prepare Sushi rice, create fillings, and make great sushi rolls. A total of 28 participants were present including staff and students.
Razlin and Nurul, kitchen staff from Sushi King , Ipoh Parade were invited to conduct the workshop. A demonstration was given by them on five types of Sushi roll such as Ngiri Sushi, Gunkan Sushi, Ura Maki and Temaki (hand roll). They shared with the students the various techniques, their expertise and experience in making great Sushi rolls.
Puan Nuraini Tan, the Coordinator from the faculty of Hospitality Management said : ”Practical training are conducted for the hotel students and this is one of it. The students are given a solid introduction to Sushi which includes the ingredients, preparation, sushi-making demo/practice, rolling, cutting and also practice and advice. Sushi is a beautifully simple, traditional Japanese food and is so healthy with lots of rice and vegetables.”
Each participant had an opportunity to make their own variations of Sushi using ingredients such as Sushi rice, seaweed, mayonnaise, cucumber, crab stick, tuna mayonnaise and egg mayonnaise. Soya sauce and wasabi was provided so that participants could eat their self-made Sushi with iced green tea.
It was both satisfying and an enriching experience for the students of Hotel programme students as they are now able to make their own freshly made Sushi which tasted absolutely gorgeous and everyone having a great make-and-eat-your-own-sushi experience.
Practical training and field trips are arranged every semester for the students on the Hotel Pprogramme. Students are also provided on-the-job-training in hotels and resorts, whereby they receive valuable advise and knowledge from the key personnel in the hotel industry who shares their experiences with the students. |
