OLYMPIA ORGANISES PUBLIC SPEAKING WORKSHOP FOR SCHOOL
The fear of public speaking is common among many of us. To eliminate this and to overcome fear and anxiety, Olympia College, Johor Bahru campus organised a public speaking workshop for approximately 85 students from SMK Banang Jaya, Batu Pahat on the 28 July 2007. The College had organised the public speaking workshop to equip the students with the necessary public speaking skills and techniques, presentation skills and to teach the students guaranteed ways to help overcome this fear and anxiety.
The workshop began after breakfast with a lecture on public speaking skills, preparation and techniques.
Mr Low Jiun Jack, the Principal of Olympia College, Johor Bahru campus said, “the objective of the workshop is to teach the students on public speaking skills and techniques, presentation skills, communications skills, team building and also to overcome their fear of public speaking. The students will gain knowledge on how to present their topics with confidence, communicate effectively, enhance their personal impact and to work as a team. This will be very imperative when they enter the corporate world.”
After lunch, students were divided into smaller groups of 10 students per group. Each group of students were given a topic to brainstorm with the facilitator so they can present as a competition. Some of the topics for presentation includes:
- Job opportunities in Business Studies
- How to improve the Malaysian Tourism
- Power of Love
- The importance of effective communication
- Skills needed for higher education
- I.T skills that we need
After discussion with the facilitators, each group of students appointed a representative speaker. The students prepared their speech and presented their topic in front of all students. Some speakers were nervous, some of them used humour to build rapport but all students presented their topics in English with great success. The workshop enabled them get the feel of the situation in the real working world.
After the presentation, the Best Public Speaking Award was given to the ‘Prince William’ Group. The topic the Group presented was “The importance of effective communication”. The ‘Lord of the Rings’ Group won the prize for being the most active group.
Overall, the students were very excited and had a great learning experience which they said will be very useful to them. The workshop had taught them public speaking skills, presentation skills, effective communications, boosted their confidence and also they have learnt to work as a team. They also had the opportunity to find out where their weaknesses lies and had the opportunity to learn and improve their presentation from this workshop. The students gave positive feedback to Olympia College, Johor Bahru campus for organizing the programme successfully.
