OLYMPIA’S SECRETARIAL STUDENTS ORGANISES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS TALK
The Executive Secretaryship Programme (CES) students from Olympia College, Kuantan Campus had organized a breast cancer awareness talk cum tea party as part of their coursework for Professional Development Workshop. The theme for the event is ‘Memorable Candle’ and the topic for the talk was on “Breast Cancer Awareness”. The talk was delivered by Professor Dr Humairah Cheung, the Director from IIUM Breast Centre, Kuantan. We received good response from the public plus members’ participation and support from ZONTA International Club.
Ms Kamala Suppiah, the Principal of Olympia College, Kuantan campus said,
“The objective of organizing this breast cancer awareness talk and memorable candle tea party is to create awareness among the students, staff and also the public, that this disease is the number one killer among women.”
“The Secretarial Programme requires the students to learn and apply an event organizing skills. We are very proud of the students and the lecturer’s commitment in making this event a success. Besides our social obligation to create awareness about cancer, this event has indirectly promoted and introduced the college to the local community.” she added.
Some women still do not know the symptoms of early stages of breast cancer. Most women only discover at second stage. When it comes to second stage cancer of breast, healing is very difficult. Among the areas covered at the talk were:
- What causes breast cancer;
- How to detect breast cancer;
- What are the treatments and;
- How to avoid breast cancer
Organizing the tea party involved great teamwork and planning. The secretarial students managed to organize the tea party according to the budget, which included food, souvenirs, setting and hall decoration items. They were very excited to see good turnout of crowd on that day and their active participation during the Q&A session. Everyone who attended benefited from the programme.
Overall, the students, lecturers and the staff had worked as a team to make this event a success. This has been a good learning experience especially for the CES students in enhancing their presentation and social skills. In addition they gained hands-on learning experience in event organizing skills.
