ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Winston F. Pereira
“All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity, but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.” - T.E. Lawrence
The late Winston F. Pereira founded the Raffles Education Group in 1995. Prior to this he had been largely instrumental in the development of independent private educational institutions. He was previously Managing Director of Stamford College Group that grew under his leadership to become the largest independent educational institution at tertiary level in South East Asia.
Foresight was the hallmark of the late Winston Pereira. A calm, soft-spoken, kind and determined man, he always believed that education should never be compromised and was determined to make quality education available to all at an affordable cost. His standards would be the benchmark on which the foundation for the Raffles Education Group was laid.
Mr Pereira’s dedication to education can be best illustrated by the advice he imparted to the pioneering cohort of the Raffles Education Group graduates during the inaugural convocation. He drilled into them that the first three years of their working life would chart their most important career investment.
To the students, he said:
“First, in terms of professional life, get ready for some fun. The adventures you have and the success you achieve as you take your place in your chosen profession will hopefully result in an enjoyment of life, which is now difficult to imagine. Second, get ready to work harder than you have ever worked before. Do not be afraid to make mistakes or experience setbacks. Remember flexibility is an important key to survival. Be happy at what you do. Do not get too comfortable. As long as your job challenges you, you better be anxious to meet those challenges. Do not be afraid to take risks. Hardly anyone succeeds without them. If you wait to do everything until you are sure it is right, you will probably never do much of anything. Never stop testing your talents in experiencing new things. Remember that successful people are always challenging their own limits. As you look for fulfilment you may be happier filling a void than following a crowd.”
Mr Pereira often reminded his staff of the need to continually update their knowledge and skills, the secret of maintaining the basic strength of demand for their services. He added:
“Obsolescence and complacency can bring one’s downfall faster than the depreciation of national currencies.”
It is with Mr Pereira’s legacy in mind that the Raffles Education Group will continually re-examine, re-educate and re-adapt itself to the opportunities, stresses and strains of the changing social, cultural, economic and political environment.
