Communication is the most important tool in business. Every type of business relationship rises and falls on the skills of communication. To refine the communication skills and become effective, detailed and positive, Olympia College had organised a workshop on “Interactive and Effective Communication in the Corporate World” by David Jackson at its Petaling Jaya campus on 17 July ’08.
The broad objectives of the workshop include:
- To create a more harmonious working environment
- To understand and complement different personality types at the workplace
- To improve communication skills within the organization and externally with customers.

This interactive session focused on communication in a changing workplace, understanding different personality types, overcoming barriers to communication, gender speak in the workplace, interpersonal relationships, seven steps to effective communication, listening: the heart of communication and improve your non-verbal communication skills.
The guest speaker, David Jackson hails from Australia and is an established trainer for major corporations in Malaysia. David has conducted hundreds of personal development and leadership seminars and workshops in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. He graduated in commerce studies from the University of Technology, Sydney and holds an MBA from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.
David thrives on coaching people to utilize their full potential and he believes that communication and personal development serves as a foundation to one’s success. Hence, he has spent part of his life cultivating special relationships through outstanding performances and helping other meet their personal goals. David has held several positions in the ANZ Banking Group Limited, Australia specializing in Corporate Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Business Strategy. He has also lectured in Business Administration in Australia before moving on to manage his own business.
Other in-house speakers were Mr. Hosny bin Hassim, who presented the topic “Business Attire: Dress to success”.
“Dress to success” is about empowering business attire and presenting yourself professionally. A top to toe discussion about the clothes - a nonverbal communication that plays an important role in how others perceive you.
Mr. Hosny has been involved in fashion (education and industry) for the past four years. In 2004, he graduated from MARA Universiti of Teknologi. He represented the university in various competitions and exhibitions including Malaysian Textiles Manufacturers Association, Young Designer which he received an award. He also attends numerous programmes to give talks related to fashion and designing.
Ms Yong Chow Peng, also an in-house speaker presented the topic “Downward Commmunication : Is it an end or a means?”
It explored on a local case study to discover whether a single type of communication, downward communication is an end or a means to meet the objectives of a company. As for the conclusion, we will ponder over the contextual aspect of communication in choosing the type of communication.
Ms. Yong is a MBA graduate from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. She has 15 years of banking experience, 10 years of experience as a Technical Instructor coupled with 5 years of experience working in Kolej Tentera Udara.
The Raffles Guest Lecture Series (RGLS) is a community service project by Olympia College, to assist the corporate Malaysia to update their knowledge on current business practices from all over the world.
